What makes this campaign stand out is how deeply it honours the source material through its expansive storyline. The narrative starts right at the beginning, letting you step into the shoes of a young Bruce Wayne wandering the grounds of Wayne Manor before his martial arts training under Ra’s al Ghul in Nanda Parbat. Going through Bruce’s early life and watching his transformation into Gotham’s protector serves as a fantastic narrative refresher.
As the campaign progresses, it brilliantly weaves together iconic set-pieces, legendary bad guys, and famous cinematic scenes spanning decades of Batman films, comics, and video games. Watching classic villains like the Joker, Penguin, Bane, and Poison Ivy step into the plastic spotlight, alongside playful nods to everything from Tim Burton’s Batman to The Dark Knight trilogy, makes the adventure feel like a grand love letter to Batman’s entire history.
Much like the ambitious structure seen in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight abandons rigid linear levels in favour of a sprawling, immersive universe where you feel like you are diving deep into the full cinematic Batman experience. Just as The Skywalker Saga allowed players to freely traverse massive planetary hubs, Legacy of the Dark Knight introduces a fully realised, open-world Gotham City complete with distinct cinematic eras.
The gameplay moments mirror those classic film beats with incredible detail from steering the Tumbler through high-speed highway chases reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s films, to grappling across gargoyle-strewn rooftops under gothic skies. The combat and traversal systems take direct inspiration from modern third-person action games, letting you seamlessly swap gadget loadouts, execute free-flowing counterattacks, and pilot iconic Bat-vehicles with a level of polish that rivals standard superhero titles while retaining that signature plastic charm.
Despite the cinematic stakes, the trademark TT Games humour remains front and centre. The story is packed with genuinely hilarious slapstick moments, visual gags, and witty character interactions that poke gentle fun at the Dark Knight’s usually stoic personality. It’s the kind of comedy that perfectly bridges the generational gap, offering plenty of laugh-out-loud moments for adults and kids alike. My 6-year-old daughter who hasn’t watched any Batman content before was laughing at some of the funny inconsequential things that happened to us in between the heavy moments that she did not watch.
My daughter and I had a lot of fun playing the game in couch co-op, especially as she is still learning to navigate an Xbox controller since the Paw Patrol games. Despite the game being pretty intense at times, the intuitive controls made it easy for her to pick up and play without getting overwhelmed. With infinite lives, accessible button layouts, and straightforward puzzle-solving, the game completely removes the frustration often found in standard action titles. The seamless drop-in, drop-out mechanics ensure you can tackle Gotham’s challenges side-by-side, solving environment puzzles, taking down henchmen, and sharing a massive laugh at every silly cutscene together.
Overall, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight delivers an amazing and fun LEGO game that bridges decades of comic book lore with accessible, joyful gameplay. Whether you are a lifelong Batman fan soaking in the vast storyline or a you’ve heard of the caped crusader but not seen any movies, this is still a whole heap of fun goofy gameplay with an easy enough story to follow.
