2024’s First State of Play Announcements Round Up

Sony hosted its first State of Play presentation for 2024 today, giving us a sneak peek at many of the games set to drop on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 throughout the year ahead. The lineup included solo player exclusives like Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, a revamped Until Dawn, and Death Stranding 2. Konami also jumped in to spotlight two fresh Silent Hill games, one of which unexpectedly dropped today.

Over 15 games took the spotlight during the January 2024 State of Play. If you missed the live show or just want a rundown of what went down, we’ve got you covered with all the announcements.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach won’t hit shelves until 2025

We caught our first glimpse of the Death Stranding sequel since The Game Awards 2022 at today’s State of Play. In another mind-bending trailer, we delved deeper into Sam Porter Bridges and Fragile’s next escapade, along with a sneak peek at gameplay. Plus, we got a peek at Elle Fanning’s character. While it’s a bit cryptic for now, it’s sure to amp up the excitement for Hideo Kojima’s next project.

This sequel officially goes by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, confirming earlier leaks. Kojima Productions also pegged the game for a 2025 release, making it a major Sony exclusive next year. Kojima also spilled the beans about another project—a return to stealth action, in collaboration with PlayStation Studios.

Stellar Blade hits shelves this April

A standout among 2024’s PS5 exclusives is Stellar Blade, a solo action adventure from developer Shift Up. Although we didn’t catch much of the game in 2023, it came back strong at this State of Play. Stellar Blade’s trailer gave us a good look at its world, characters, quests, exploration, foes, skills, combat, and more. And at the end of the segment, we learned Stellar Blade drops on April 26 for PS5.

A free Silent Hill game launches on PS5 today

Silent Hill had a big presence at this State of Play. It kicked off with the reveal of Silent Hill: The Short Message, a first-person freebie dropping today. Then, we got an in-depth peek at the Silent Hill 2 remake since 2022, promising a spine-chilling reimagining of a horror classic. Konami didn’t dish out a release date for the remake though.

Until Dawn is coming to PS5 and PC

Following news of an Until Dawn movie, Sony confirmed a rebuilt version of Supermassive’s PS4 horror hit is on the way. Developed by a new studio named Ballistic Moon, it’s set to hit PS5 and PC sometime this year.
