It’s been a fascinating journey watching my daughters, now aged 8 and 5, navigate the various releases of licensed video games on our Xbox over the years. One publisher has consistently kept pace with their evolving skill levels which is the team at Outright Games. Developed by Artax Games, Dora: Rainforest Rescue is our latest adventure, and my 5-year-old daughter has enjoyed her time in the rainforest, getting even better at using the Xbox controller.
Launching in the 25th anniversary year of the Dora franchise, Dora: Rainforest Rescue has you playing as Dora and Boots on a mission to stop Swiper’s latest scheme and restore the magical Alebrije Tree. Across five locations you will run, jump, and swing through colourful environments, collect magic leaves and Alebrije pods, and solve puzzles that blend adventure with Spanish language learning.

Along the way you will meet characters including Tico, Isa, Benny, Big Red Chicken, and Ale the Alebrije. There are a variety of mini-games that breaks up the general platforming gameplay including Swiper Swipe quick-reflex challenges, Troll’s Quiz educational riddles, and additional activities. My daughter and I could play the game in two-player local co-op which allowed me to help her navigate the world and solve puzzles together.
The core gameplay loop of Dora: Rainforest Rescue involves platforming, item collecting, and simple environmental puzzles—all hallmarks of the genre but executed here with a light touch. This is definitely aimed at the younger audience so older teenage and adult gamers may find this far too simplistic. However, as a gamer Dad watching my daughters get more proficient at using a controller and having fun in a non-violent game, this is gold for some family fun time on weekends.

My daughters have aged along with the release schedule of the Outright Games’ portfolio including Paw Patrol, Pepper Pig, PJ Masks, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie, and now Dora. In terms of skill level involved, Dora: Rainforest Rescue is a foundational entry point. It represents the crucial step where platforming and exploration skills are challenged in a low-stress, high-reward adventure that keeps the focus squarely on fun and cooperation.
Overall, Dora: Rainforest Rescue is a great stepping stone for young gamers who are fans of Dora the Explorer and are ready to move beyond basic gameplay mechanics. This is another great example of Outright Games’ reputation in our home as the publisher that understands the family gaming market. Highly recommended for young explorers ready to take their first big cinematic gaming adventure with Mums and Dads watching and playing with them split screen.
