Yet Another Zombie Survivors Review – An Addictive Twist

Yet Another Zombie Survivors by Awesome Games Studio officially launched v1.0 on August 20, 2026 for PC and consoles. Being a bullet heaven game, it is easy to assume you know exactly what you are in for. However, beneath the surface lies one of the most engaging and mechanically fresh entries the genre has seen in a while. Instead of controlling a lone hero collecting floating experience gems, you build a literal three-person squad on the fly.

As the developers pitch on their Steam page, humanity is far from giving up. The setup strips away drawn-out cutscenes or overly complex mechanics to focus on pure, unfiltered arcade mayhem. The game embraces the core charm of the bullet heaven loop where aiming and shooting are largely automated, letting you concentrate on positioning, squad building, and watching the screen fill with absolute fireworks.

For my first few runs in Yet Another Zombie Survivors, I went straight for the Tank as my squad leader. Starting with a heavy, powerful shotgun, he acts as a solid anchor when the initial waves start crowding in. Once you get moving, the real magic happens when you start layering abilities. Upgrade the Tank to unlock his orbiting sawblades to slice through close-range undead, recruit the long-range Ranger for precision cover, and tag in the Engineer to shock entire crowds with high-voltage Tesla coils. Before long, your small band of survivors turns into a killing machine. Holding out for the full 20-minute timer becomes an exhilarating test of crowd control as the screen fills with thousands of zombies.

The 1.0 update introduces a proper Survivors’ Camp that gives the game a surprisingly strong heartbeat. Between runs, you hang out at base, listen to radio transmissions, and eavesdrop on chatter among your crew. It adds a layer of personality that turns what could have been generic character archetypes into a tight-knit squad you actually care about. Tying into the camp is the Briefing Room, which hands out main storyline quests and individual character side missions. Completing these builds Team Bond, permanently boosting your post-run cash flow and specialisation stats.

Outside the standard 20-minute horde survival, the 1.0 release of Yet Another Zombie Survivors expands the endgame considerably. The new Bio Lab map tests your spatial awareness, while dedicated Boss Rush modes force you to rethink squad synergies on the fly. Going toe-to-toe with massive Behemoths and specialised mutated threats delivers genuine high-stakes encounters rather than just mindlessly mowing down endless mobs.

Where the game truly shines is the squad-building mechanics that breathe fresh air into a crowded genre. Tying permanent upgrades directly into character relationships through base camp chatter and Briefing Room missions gives every run genuine narrative purpose beyond simply inflating numbers. Combined with deep class synergies and diverse endgame modes, it establishes an addictive progression loop that easily stands among the best in the bullet heaven space.

The experience isn’t entirely without its rough edges, most notably in its visual design. The character models and environment art lack the aesthetic flair or stylistic polish found in top-tier genre competitors, giving it a somewhat generic initial impression. Additionally, as late-game runs reach peak intensity, the screen can become so overwhelmed with numerical pop-ups, overlapping particle effects, and dense zombie sprites that tracking incoming hazards becomes chaotic, but that’s where the intensity becomes high stakes in those final minutes, making success addictive and rewarding.

It might not win any beauty contests but Yet Another Zombie Survivors elevates the bullet heaven formula where it counts. The loop of fighting through hordes as a team of three heroes with combined abilities, heading back to base to shoot the breeze with your team, and taking on targeted missions creates a sense of progression that keeps you coming back for “just one more run”.

This review utilised a key provided by the developers and Yet Another Zombie Survivors is out now on Steam, GOG, Xbox, and PlayStation.
