Caravan SandWitch is a narrative-driven exploration adventure game developed by Studio Plane Toast and published by Dear Villagers. The game launched on September 12 and takes players on a post-apocalyptic journey through the desolate yet beautiful world of Cigalo. The game masterfully blends exploration, puzzle-solving, and storytelling, creating an immersive and chill experience that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking.
The story centres around Sauge, who has received a mysterious emergency signal from her long-lost sister, so she must return to her home planet of Cigalo to search for her sister. The planet, once thriving, has been ravaged by human exploitation, leaving behind a mix of ancient species, robots, and the few remaining humans. As Sauge unravels the mystery of her sister’s disappearance, she encounters various inhabitants whose stories highlight the harsh realities of survival and the importance of community.
One of the first things that struck me about the game is the amazing soundtrack. Composed by Antynomy, the 23-track composition perfectly complements the game’s atmosphere, enhancing the emotional depth of the story and the beauty of the world of Cigalo. Most of the songs evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia, making the exploration of the desolate landscapes even more immersive.
There’s no voice acting in the game though which is really the only thing that could make me like the game more. There is a lot of dialogue reading which I don’t mind, but when the game is this chill to play, too much reading can make me start drifting off. Whereas listening to a voice actor’s words while still moving around keeps my attention.
You will navigate the desolate landscapes of Cigalo using Sauge’s van, which serves as a crucial companion throughout the journey. The van can be upgraded with various tools and gadgets, allowing players to access new areas and overcome obstacles. The game emphasizes exploration in a post-apocalyptic world and removing jamming devices that will reveal more of the world map. You will need to search for components that are used to craft these upgrades as each new tool unlocks different pathways and interactions.
Caravan SandWitch excels in its puzzle design, offering a variety of challenges that are both engaging and satisfying. The puzzles range from activating switches to deactivating electronic jamming devices, scanning and marking items with the van, requiring both strategic thinking and further exploration. There is no fall damage, stamina bars, timers, or combat and this is a refreshing approach allowing you to explore at your own pace. The game strikes a balance between puzzle complexity and enjoyment, ensuring that you remain invested in the journey.
Caravan SandWitch is a super chill and engaging indie game with a stunning soundtrack, decent puzzle challenges and a captivating story to keep pushing you to explore further. It offers a unique and rewarding experience that is sure to resonate with players long after they have completed their journey. Whether you’re a fan of exploration games or simply looking for a heartfelt adventure, I highly recommend giving Caravan SandWitch a play.
