Ever since Zenimax Online Studios announced late last year, a change to the cadence of content releases for The Elder Scrolls Online, I have been eagerly waiting to see what would be coming in 2025 after ESO: Gold Road and the game’s 10th anniversary last year. This question has been answered and ESO just got a major shake-up! During the 2025 ESO Direct, ZeniMax unveiled a slew of exciting content including Seasons of the Worm Cult, a brand-new zone, a gripping storyline, and a new way to customise our characters with subclasses. Let’s dive into the details!
Seasons of the Worm Cult: A Sequel to the Base Game
One of the biggest announcements was the shift away from annual Chapter releases. This strategic move allows the development team greater flexibility to experiment and deliver a wider variety of content throughout the year. The centerpiece of 2025 is the Seasons of the Worm Cult saga, a two-part storyline that takes players to the island of Solstice. This brand-new zone is divided by the mysterious Writhing Wall and plagued by the nefarious Worm Cult. More interesting to me is that this storyline continues the game’s main quest line from the base game. I have completed that once on one of my characters and didn’t bother doing all of it again since then, so I am excited to see where this sequel story saga takes us. One thing to note is that players don’t need to have completed the game’s original story to enjoy this one.
- Part 1: Launching June 2 for PC/Mac and June 18 for consoles.
- Part 2: Arriving later in 2025.

Introducing the 2025 Content Pass
To streamline access to this new flow of content, ZeniMax Online Studios has introduced the 2025 Content Pass. This pass grants players access to all major updates planned for the year, including:
- Seasons of the Worm Cult Parts 1 & 2: A two-part adventure taking place on the new zone of Solstice.
- Two Dungeon Packs: Fallen Banners (already live) and Feast of Shadows (coming Spring 2025).
- The Writhing Wall: A massive collaborative in-game event that will shape the world of Tamriel.
The Writhing Wall: A World-Changing Event
The Writhing Wall, a magical barrier erected by the Worm Cult, will be the focus of a massive in-game event. Players will need to band together to breach the wall and unlock access to Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 2. This collaborative event promises to be a game-changer for the ESO community.
Dungeon Packs: Challenges and Rewards
The 2025 Content Pass also includes two dungeon packs:
- Fallen Banners: Already available, offering new challenges and rewards.
- Feast of Shadows: Arriving in Spring 2025, promising more thrilling dungeon content.
Each pack features two unique four-player dungeons, complete with their own storylines, achievements, and loot.

Subclassing and Hero’s Return: A New Level of Customisation
Update 46, launching alongside Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1, introduces two major features:
- Subclassing: This groundbreaking system allows players to replace up to two of their character’s class Skill Lines with those from other classes. This opens up endless possibilities for creating unique and powerful hybrid builds.
- Hero’s Return: A new system designed to help returning players get back into the game. It provides a seamless refresher and offers in-game rewards to aid their journey.
Kinda Funny Podcast Series: A Decade of ESO
To celebrate ESO’s 10-year journey, ZeniMax Online Studios has partnered with Kinda Funny Games for a limited podcast series. The series will feature discussions with the development team, offering insights into the game’s history and evolution. The first episode went live on Friday, April 11.

The future of The Elder Scrolls Online looks exciting. I was starting to feel the annual Chapter releases had run their course and while I loved playing through their stories, I did feel there was some kind of big change needed to keep the game fresh into the next 10 years. Will Seasons of the Worm Cult, subclassing, and a revamped content delivery system be enough to get us back in more regularly? Time will tell, but from what I have seen so far, 2025 is shaping up to be a great time to jump back into Tamriel!
