Ardenfall is an upcoming first-person open world RPG developed by indie team Spellcast Studios and is targeting a full Early Access release in 2026. Heavy on classic open-world player freedom and wearing its Morrowind inspiration on its sleeve, the demo drops you into a sprawling fantasy sandbox that feels grounded in traditional RPG design.
The story places you in the boots of an outsider navigating the politically fractured and ancient Isle of Ardenfall. Rather than forcing a rigid linear path, the demo immediately hooks you with a web of local tensions, competing factions, and intricate lore. You are left to piece together the history of its inhabitants through subtle environmental storytelling and mixing voiced greetings with deep text interactions. Quest design leans heavily into immersive sim flexibility. A core demo quest involving a massive creature blocking a tunnel can be tackled in completely different ways: brewing customised potions, sneaking past to sabotage support structures, or skipping the townsfolk entirely via vertical traversal spellwork.

Visually, Ardenfall immediately grabs your attention with a stylised, low-poly alien landscape aesthetic that punches far above its weight. The art style uses striking colour palettes to differentiate its distinct biomes. You shift seamlessly from warm, sun-drenched golden plains to eerie, cool-hued wetlands and alien coastal stretches. This visual variety acts as a constant landmark system, while clever verticality that features jump-boost items, levitation mechanics, and sky-island vents invites you to explore every cliffside and hidden dungeon entrance off the beaten path.
Mechanically, the first-person combat strikes a nice balance between action and RPG depth. The fundamentals are easy to pick up with standard encounters revolving around managing light and heavy attacks while relying on well-timed parries and blocks to break enemy momentum. Combat is further enriched by physical spell projectiles that obey gravity and a strict stamina system that pauses regeneration while sprinting, forcing you to play with deliberate timing.

Where the gameplay truly shines is in its RPG systems. Stats directly govern your armour and weapon proficiencies, while dialogue choices regularly check against your character’s traits and background, giving the player agency over how you resolve conflicts or talk your way out of trouble. Creative thinking and genuine roleplaying is rewarded over rigid pathways.
As an early demo, there are still a few rough edges. NPC daily routines can feel static, stealing items right under a shopkeeper’s nose currently goes largely unpunished, and early stat upgrades don’t always translate into immediate power spikes. However, these are minor growing pains for an indie build in active development.

If this early demo slice of Ardenfall is any indication, Spellcast Studios is crafting a captivating, player-driven RPG that honours the golden age of classic fantasy games while bringing a distinct visual and mechanical identity of its own. This is definitely one to keep an eye on for fans of first-person RPGs.
These demo impressions utilised a key provided by the developers and Ardenfall is aiming for a 2026 Early Access release on Steam with a demo available now.
