‘The Cub’ Demo Impressions

Back in March, The Cub was first announced by Untold Tales and Demagog Studio, the same team who made the brilliant Golf Club: Wasteland. A playable demo of samples from three different levels is available to download on Steam and I highly recommend you check it out. It picks up where the Golf Club: Wasteland story left off, only this time we are playing as a small boy on Earth, in a tough platformer game.

The young boy, raised on Earth by wolves, picks up a space helmet and hears music and talking through the earpiece. Earth is a Wasteland and humanity, at least those that could afford it, have fled to Mars. Life on Mars is tough, and we learn this through listening to “Radio Nostalgia from Mars”, a radio station where people are interviewed giving candid and sometimes emotional stories about their previous life on Earth and now life on Mars.

The music that gave Golf Club: Wasteland such an amazing vibe is back and better than ever. I can’t wait to play the full game to experience every song that will be on offer, as the soundtrack to the first game was phenomenal. Gameplay-wise, the world is the same as the first game, only this time we are able to run along the ground, swing across gaps with vines, jump up to platforms, crawl through small pipes and dash through boarded doorways.

Like the first game, there were sections that were initially frustrating, such as when a platform that you need to jump from ledge to ledge, has sections break away and if you’re not quick enough to the tops of those sections, you’ll plummet to your death. There are also animals that will kill you in one hit, as well as spikes. Most of this is par for the course of platform games, so seasoned veterans will be well versed in these obtacles.

The demo gave us a sample of three different levels which took me about 20 minutes, with numerous mistakes made, and I just want to play more! I can’t wait for the full release which doesn’t have a date yet, however, The Cub will be available on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox. Definitely add the game to your wishlist!
